Brian Morton & Co. Solicitors is a Notary Public.

A notary public is a public officer who serves the public in non-contentious matters involving foreign or international business.

Notaries certify that a deed, contract other writing has been executed in their presence.

You are likely to need the services of a notary public if you have to send papers or documents to a foreign jurisdiction. A notary public may be required in relation to foreign adoption papers, affidavits for use in foreign courts, international documents or copies of State documents for use abroad.

We can help if you need:

  • a document authenticated
  • signatures to documents witnessed and proved
  • oaths administered
  • affidavits taken

Public notaries may also draw up Powers of Attorney. A Power of Attorney is a document signed by one person to give another power to sign documents on their behalf and to take certain actions on their behalf as are described specifically or generally in the document. In most cases, you must sign the Power of Attorney in the presence of a Notary Public. The Power of Attorney is often drawn up by the foreign power to whom authority is to be granted.

You must have any foreign language document which you intend to produce properly translated before meeting the Notary. The Notary may ask you to sign a formal acknowledgement that you understand the document and its purpose.

If you need a document notarised, please bring the following:

  • the original document or documents to be notarised
  • proof of your identity

For companies, proof of identity is required for each of the company’s Directors or Shadow Directors.

Please note that a company must prove to the Notary that it is empowered under its Memorandum and Articles of Association to complete the documentation.
